Mac Terminal Apps in 2026: Ghostty Arrived, Warp Evolved, and iTerm2 Learned New Tricks

A practical update to our 2025 Mac terminal roundup, covering Ghostty, iTerm2, Warp, Kitty, Alacritty, Rio, Hyper, and what has actually changed.

Mac Terminal Apps in 2026: Ghostty Arrived, Warp Evolved, and iTerm2 Learned New Tricks

In January 2025, we published our guide to the top five modern terminal apps for macOS. The list featured iTerm2, Warp, Alacritty, Hyper, and Kitty. It was a sensible lineup at the time.

Terminals apparently took that personally.

Since then, Ghostty has matured into a serious macOS contender, Warp has become an agentic development environment and opened its client source code, iTerm2 has added AI chat and somehow become a web browser, and Kitty has taught terminal windows to perform drag and drop over SSH. The humble rectangle containing a shell prompt is experiencing an identity crisis, but at least it is a productive one.

We reviewed official documentation, changelogs, and releases available on August 11, 2026. This is not a synthetic benchmark contest. Terminal performance depends on fonts, display scaling, shell configuration, multiplexers, and workload, while most modern options are already fast enough to display systemctl status before you finish regretting why you ran it.

Ghostty is the biggest addition to the shortlist

Ghostty made its first public release at the end of December 2024, just before our previous article. It was too new to earn a place then. It is not too new now.

Ghostty aims to combine three things terminal users often had to choose between: speed, a useful feature set, and a native interface. Its macOS application is written with Swift, AppKit, and SwiftUI, while the terminal core and renderer are implemented in Zig. Tabs, splits, menus, keyboard shortcuts, Quick Look, secure input, and window restoration behave like macOS features rather than widgets visiting from another operating system.

The project has also shipped at a healthy pace. Ghostty 1.2 added macOS Tahoe support and its Liquid Glass appearance. Version 1.3, released in March 2026, added scrollback search, native scrollbars, click-to-move at shell prompts, editable tab titles, better split management, Apple Shortcuts integration, and many compatibility fixes. A quick terminal, automatic light and dark themes, Kitty graphics, and hundreds of bundled themes were already available.

The attraction is simple: Ghostty feels modern without requiring the terminal to become an IDE or cloud account. Configuration is text-based, but the defaults are good enough to start immediately. It is our strongest new recommendation for Mac users who want native behaviour, GPU rendering, tabs, and splits in one focused application.

The caution is equally simple. Ghostty is younger than iTerm2 and Kitty. Its configuration surface and compatibility work are growing quickly, but teams with years of iTerm2 profiles, triggers, scripts, and muscle memory may not gain enough from moving immediately. A terminal migration is still a migration, even when the new icon is attractive.

iTerm2 is still the sysadmin multitool

iTerm2 remains difficult to replace when the job involves many SSH sessions, profiles, triggers, captured output, tmux integration, password-manager support, and deeply customised workflows. It is not the newest terminal here, but neither is SSH, and both continue to pay the bills.

The major change since our earlier article is iTerm2 3.6. Its built-in AI Chat can explain output, annotate terminal content, and propose or run actions with permission. Users can select AI providers and models rather than being locked to one assistant. Later updates added more safety controls and password-manager integrations, including KeePass, Bitwarden, and Keeper.

Version 3.6 also introduced web-browser profiles. Yes, iTerm2 can now open a browser in a tab beside your shell, with features such as form filling, reader mode, password-manager access, and remote-file integration. This sounds like scope creep until you are reading documentation next to a production session and realise that scope has already crept into your normal working day.

SSH integration improved too. Remote files can appear in open and save dialogs, paths can be opened through the integrated browser, and files can be downloaded over an existing integrated SSH connection. Tahoe styling and Unicode updates keep the interface current, while the 3.6.x releases have continued to harden security and fix the less glamorous crashes that separate a demo from a daily driver.

Choose iTerm2 when you want the broadest macOS-specific toolbox and do not mind exploring settings. Choose Ghostty when you want a cleaner, more native-feeling starting point with fewer layers. We still use iTerm2 heavily because years of reliable habits count as a feature, even when they do not appear in release notes.

Warp is no longer just a terminal

Our 2025 article described Warp as a next-generation terminal with command blocks, workflows, collaboration, and GPU acceleration. That description now feels like calling a datacenter “a room with some plugs.”

Warp has moved toward an agentic development environment. Its agents can inspect repositories, edit files, run commands, prepare plans, review diffs, interact with full-screen terminal applications, and connect to external tools through MCP. A built-in editor gained broader file support and language-server features. Cloud agents and team integrations can take work away from the local prompt and bring it back later.

The other major change is trust and transparency. In April 2026, Warp open-sourced its client. Most of the client is under AGPLv3, while its UI framework uses the MIT licence. Cloud orchestration and AI services remain part of Warp’s commercial model, so “open source” does not mean every feature runs locally or without an account. It does mean the client code can now be inspected, built, discussed, and contributed to publicly.

Warp is the best fit for developers who want AI agents, code editing, reviews, and terminal work in one application. For an infrastructure engineer who wants a quiet local shell and ten SSH tabs, it may feel like bringing an airport control tower to operate a bicycle. Powerful, impressive, and perhaps more dashboard than today’s ride requires.

Kitty became even more of a power-user platform

Kitty was already fast and feature-rich in 2025. Since then, it has expanded the things that can happen around the terminal, not merely inside it.

Recent releases added a quick-access terminal on macOS, saved and switchable sessions, smooth momentum scrolling, mouse-based tab movement and split resizing, and a keyboard-first file selector with previews. Kitty 0.47 introduced drag and drop between terminal programs and GUI applications, including across SSH when supported by the remote workflow. It also received important security fixes in 2026, which is a useful reminder to update terminal emulators rather than treating them as immortal plumbing.

Kitty remains excellent for users who enjoy configuration, automation, remote control, graphics protocols, and “kittens,” its collection of helper programs. The feature set is enormous. The learning curve is not vertical, but it has clearly been given GPU acceleration.

Alacritty stayed focused, which is the point

Alacritty has not transformed into an editor, browser, agent manager, or lifestyle platform. Version 0.17.0 arrived in April 2026 with incremental input, configuration, compatibility, and stability work. It remains a fast cross-platform terminal emulator with a deliberately narrow scope.

Native tabs and splits are still not part of the plan. The project recommends leaving those jobs to a window manager or terminal multiplexer such as tmux. There is no graphical settings panel waiting to help when TOML rejects your comma.

That restraint is either Alacritty’s greatest feature or the reason you will uninstall it after twelve minutes. Choose it if you want a responsive terminal surface and prefer to assemble the rest of the workflow yourself. If you want macOS-native tabs and a drop-down console immediately, Ghostty is now the easier minimalist recommendation.

Hyper is alive, but no longer our default recommendation

Hyper still offers something distinctive: a terminal built with web technologies and extended through JavaScript, CSS, themes, and plugins. Development continues, and the 4.0 canary series includes Apple Silicon packages and ongoing dependency and component updates.

However, the public release story has moved more slowly than Ghostty, Kitty, Warp, or Alacritty. The current 4.0 builds remain labelled pre-release, and the Electron-based architecture carries a larger footprint than native or focused GPU terminals. Hyper still makes sense for users who specifically value its plugin ecosystem and web-style customisation. For a fresh installation in 2026, we would start elsewhere unless those are the features that brought you to the party.

No software needs a ceremonial funeral merely because newer projects exist. Hyper can keep doing useful work. It just no longer gets the automatic “best for tinkerers” slot from our earlier list.

Rio is the interesting smaller project to watch

Rio is another Rust-based, hardware-accelerated terminal available as a universal macOS binary for Apple Silicon and Intel Macs. By version 0.4.5 in May 2026, it offered tabs, splits, search, a command palette, shell integration, configurable navigation, and cross-platform packages.

Rio sits between Alacritty’s minimalism and the larger feature collections of Kitty or iTerm2. It is quick to try, open source, and visually polished. It is also a smaller project with fewer users and less accumulated compatibility history than the established choices. We would happily test it on a personal machine; we would migrate an entire operations team only after verifying the shells, fonts, keyboard layouts, serial tools, and remote applications that team actually uses.

That is not faint praise. Every established terminal was once the new application asking strangers to trust it with production SSH keys.

What should a Mac sysadmin choose in 2026?

For most people, the shortlist is now straightforward.

Choose Ghostty if you want a fast, focused terminal with native macOS behaviour, good defaults, tabs, and splits.

Choose iTerm2 if you depend on advanced profiles, triggers, password managers, tmux, rich SSH integration, or a decade’s worth of carefully evolved configuration.

Choose Kitty if you want a fast, cross-platform power-user environment with extensive automation, sessions, graphics, and remote-control features.

Choose Alacritty if the terminal should render text quickly and let tmux handle the furniture.

Choose Warp if you actively want AI agents, code editing, planning, and review workflows wrapped around the command line.

Try Rio if you enjoy promising smaller projects and want a modern middle ground. Keep Hyper if its JavaScript plugin ecosystem is the reason you chose it; otherwise, compare it with Ghostty before setting up a new Mac.

The best terminal is not the one with the longest feature list. It is the one whose behaviour you understand when a server is failing, the pager has gone off, and the command in your clipboard contains more quotation marks than anyone intended.

The server does not care which terminal won

Whether the SSH session starts in iTerm2, Ghostty, Kitty, Alacritty, Rio, or Warp, the remote machine still sees a shell, a terminal type, and an administrator who hopefully checked the hostname before running the command.

ITLDC NVMe VDS and dedicated servers provide the infrastructure at the other end of that session. Choose a nearby location, use SSH keys, verify host keys, keep the terminal updated, and consider tmux or another multiplexer for work that must survive a dropped laptop connection. A beautiful terminal cannot rescue a process killed by closing the only session attached to it. Beauty has limits; tmux attach has fewer.

Our 2025 winner, iTerm2, remains an excellent choice. The difference in 2026 is that it no longer wins by default. Ghostty is now the strongest native challenger, Kitty keeps expanding, Warp has become a different category, and Rio deserves attention. That is healthy competition for a type of software whose fundamental job is still to display text from the 1970s correctly.
